At Kimmel Farm Problem-Based Elementary School the second graders live and learn upstairs. This blog will feature tales from their days in the classroom, on the playground and during special events just for them!

Culture

We spent most of April talking about culture. We talked about what culture meant - about the traditions and meanings behind them. Many of you went out of your way to share your families culture with your child and they throughly enjoyed sharing this information with their classmates. After gaining some back ground knowledge from our Social Studies book each child was assigned a partner and country to research and write about - What fun they had! They spent some time in the computer lab research and not a many minutes went by where I didn't hear, "Mrs. Mabe look what we found out!" For some students this was their first experience with an anything to do with a culture other then theirs and what a treat it was for them!

                          Sharing about their culture!

Using their notes write rough drafts...then they were edited and then final copies were written in their culture books!

2-d shapes and 3-d shapes, Oh My!

After we returned from Spring Break we spent some time working on 2-d and 3-d shapes. We learned about their names, attributes and in the process learned LOTS of new vocabulary. Vertex, angle, edge, line, side, face, corner, equilateral, quadrilateral...

working with shapes to make new shapes

time to make 3-d shapes....their creative juices were definitely flowing...

I love how they worked together to make sure everyone had a part in building, making and creating! You can see how much fun they were having - all while LEARNING! That makes my teacher heart happy :)

Wrapping up the quarter - Addition Sundaes and Easter!

We ended the quarter with lots of hard work and many assessments however, in the middle of all that work we managed to have some fun. For 9 days the students took timed addition tests to see how big they could make their ice cream sundae - this was serious business and their favorite minute of the day! We also did some Easter reading and Jelly Bean Math before we left for Spring Break - take a look!! (pics are in backwards order :) )

What's the 'Matter'?

We spent quite a bit of time studying about Matter this quarter. We learned about the different states of matter and how to change the states of certain things. To do this we did some reading, watched some videos but most importantly did quite a few experiments. Take a look at what all we did and learned!

 YUMMY!!

It is makes science extra fun when it turns into a snack!!!
