A WiLd week!

This week we were crazy busy - and then on Wednesday Night while at home I decided to make it a bit more hectic by having Pirate Day!

We did our normal reading, writing, math and science but to that we added Constitution Day and Pirate Day - take a look.

For Constitution Day we talk about the Constitution and discussed why we have one but we spent the majority of our time talking about the Preamble. The students broke down each line into their own words to discover the true meaning. We also watched the old School House Rock video (yes you likely saw it when you were in school). By the time it was all said and done they were singing the preamble - that is so awesome in my eyes!! Take a trip down memory lane and watch for yourself!

School House Rock - Preamble

On Thursday we had talk like a Pirate Day! This was the most fun I have had teaching yet this year. Pirate reading, pirate writing, pirate math and even pirate recess games. Of course no special day is complete without a special snack - and this day did not disappoint!!!

AARRGGGG Mateys!

 I just LOVE these kids!!!

Perimeter, Plants and Fears...

Our first math mini unit was on perimeter. This was a new concept for most of the students but they caught on quickly. The most challenging part of perimeter is remembering to check your work when adding up the sides!!!

Hollow Log Park is where ants hang out and they are going to match around it - How far will they have to march?

Later in the week - I set out a challenge for them. They were given a house blueprint with some of the side measurements missing. They had to use what they know about the relationships in perimeter to find the missing sides. It is always fun to watch them problem solve.

Last week we continued our Science talks about plants. We have talked about the parts of a plant and the function of each part as well as what a plant needs to survive. To show roots doing their job we did a celery experiment. Each stalk of celery was placed in the same amount of water with 10 drops of food coloring. We watched them for TWO days.
 Day one 8:30am

mid day observations... noon - some changes are already showing up!

 The next morning...

As you can see there were lots of changes and the students were amazed when we pulled the stalks apart and they were able to see the colored water in the roots.

We are reading The War with Grandpa as our first class novel. In this activity they had to relate their feelings to Peter's (main character from the story). He has many fears of having to move upstairs which is creating a problem in the story. It was really interesting to see how each group accomplished this goal. One person from each group shared with the rest of the class.

So much to learn so little time - BUT we are having a ball!!!
